Camping – backwoods style

Well, we had a successful first camping trip with my niece, Charlotte, and my nephew, Oliver.  It was their first time off the grid and they did very well, despite Oliver not liking dirt on his feet (he soon got somewhat used to it!!).  We spent a couple days in the first bit of the Sayward Lakes Loop which is a great spot to kayak or canoe.  This was a short test trip and the kids passed with flying colours; they are game to go again and do a bigger trip!  Enjoy the video!  (To get the best resolution, make sure you select 1080HD from the cog at the bottom of the youTube window)

Well…

When doing the winter fence project, we discovered a well in the hedgerow.  With no end in sight to the never ending summer, I decided that today would be a good day to pump out the well and check the recovery rate.  My neighbours Grant and Gerry helped out and Manuel made a quick appearance in a supervisory capacity.  We discovered the well is about a metre in diameter by nearly six metres deep.  Cleaning it wasn’t an experience for the squeamish or those with claustrophobia.  Anyway, we’ll check the recovery rate tomorrow but hopefully we’ll be on to a new source of water for my winter planting project!

Pet owners – please view and share

Summer is here and with it the heat!  One of my pet peeves is when I see animal owners leave their pets in a car, even if for only a couple minutes.  I confronted one dog owner who was just running in to get some milk at a local shop; “I’ll only be two minutes” he said, perhaps ignorant of the fact that his dog could die in those short two minutes.  I now have some posters printed which I keep in my car and I put them on the windscreen of anyone leave a pet in the car, even if it is shaded and has the windows cracked.  Anyway, I saw the video below on youTube; if you are a pet owner or know someone who owns a pet (hell, just watch it anyway) then take a couple minutes to watch this vet as he spends 30 minutes in a car.

Boccé 2013

Screen Shot 2013-06-25 at 7.49.54 AMWell, mark your calendars and get your balls polished up, the 2013 edition of the Boccé Bash is now here.   The tourney date is Saturday, August 10th on the boccé pitches @ Knight.  We’ll follow the usual format – details to follow in a few weeks.  Just remember that registration commences July 10th and space is limited to 24 teams.  You can register at my office or if you see me in person; $50 per team (we need team name and t-shirt sizes) and pay to play.  Costumes and team themes encouraged.  Don’t delay as it fills up fast (as some of you can remember from last year!).  Thanks and see you soon!

Boccé Bash 2012

Spring has nearly sprung so it’s time for your advance reminder about the 2012 Boccé Bash.  It’ll be held on Saturday, August 11th at the Knight Road boccé pitches!  The format will be similar to last year although I have a few tweaks in mind.  More details will be posted in early July; remember, space is limited and we’ll be registering teams on a first-pay, first-in basis.

For those of you who own businesses, if you want to be involved with sponsoring the event, please let me know well in advance (i.e. by mid-June).  Sponsorship is $150 and includes your team entry (so it is really $100).

Russ and Tony were the 2011 champs and I’m sure will be coming back to defend their title.  We’re probably looking at a 24 team tournament this year as it keeps things going time wise.

For more details, email or phone me.
